about

Psalm 46 is a statement of indomitable faith. This psalmist knows that the world is falling apart: there are natural disasters, wars, plotting, scheming, and wholesale rebellion against God. But faith says, “That won’t shake me. I stand firm in the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.” God will put an end to all rebellion and human pride, he will save his people, and he will be glorified over all things.

lyrics

To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A Song.

God is our refuge and strength,
A helper most present in need.
Therefore we will not fear,
Not even though earth starts to shake!
Even though mountains move into the heart,
To the heart of the seas, and its waters roar:
They will roar! and they will foam!
Mountains quake at its swelling pride.

There is a river whose streams
Bring joy to the city of God,
A sanctified dwelling place
Of he who is high above all!
God remains in her midst; she won’t be moved.
God will give help to her when the morning dawns:
Nations roar! The kingdoms move!
Earth dissolves as he sends his voice!

The LORD of hosts, the LORD is right here with us!
Our fortress, our fortress Jacob’s God!

Come and behold all the works
the LORD has done, how he has brought
Desolations on earth.
To the end of earth he makes wars cease,
Breaks the bow, cracks the spear, and with a fire
Burns the chariots. “Be still! Know that I am God!
I’ll be exalted above the nations!
I’ll be exalted over all the earth!”

The LORD of hosts, the LORD is right here with us!
Our fortress, our fortress Jacob’s God!
