about

When we sing psalm 61, we pray for God’s blessing both on ourselves and on our king. We do this because God’s purpose for leaders is that they would be agents of protection and salvation for their people. Whether we have kings or presidents or something else, this psalm still teaches us to be mindful of our national context when we pray. More importantly, though, it points us not to a political leader but to Jesus Christ. He is the king of kings, and he is the only one who can truly save us and bring us to dwell with God forever.

lyrics

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. Of David.

Hear my cry O God; listen to my prayer.
From the end of the earth, I call upon you there.
When my heart grows faint, then unto you I cry:
Lead me up to the rock that is higher than I!

For you have been a refuge unto me,
You’re a tower of strength against the enemy.
O forever let me in your house abide;
May your wings be where I can run and hide.

For you, O God, have heard my promises.
With those who fear your name you give my heritage.
Add unto the king’s days more days yet again,
And extend his years to all generations.

May he ever dwell before the face of God.
With both faithfulness and love appointed to his guard.
And to your name I will sing forevermore
While I keep my vows all the days of my life.
